Dev Diwali or (also called “Dev Deepawali”) is a significant festival celebrated in Kashi (Varanasi), one of the holiest cities in India, on the full moon night (Kartik Purnima) of the Hindu month of Kartik. It occurs 15 days after Diwali, the festival of lights. While Diwali marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, Dev Deepawali is celebrated as the day when the gods are believed to descend to Earth to celebrate the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura. The festival is especially grand along the ghats of the Ganga River in Varanasi.
Dev Diwali in Kashi is a deeply spiritual and visually stunning event, drawing devotees and tourists from all over India and the world. It showcases the city’s ancient traditions and cultural heritage.
Key Highlights of Dev Deepawali
Ghats Illuminated with Diyas (Earthen Lamps): On the evening of Dev Diwali, millions of diya's are lit on the steps of the ghats, creating a mesmerizing scene along the banks of the Ganges. The sight of the glowing lamps, reflected in the river, creates a stunning visual.
Ganga Aarti: The evening Ganga Aarti, which is already famous throughout the year, becomes even more special during Dev Diwali. Priests perform elaborate rituals, with large lamps and chanting of hymns, in honor of the river and the gods
Processions and Cultural Events: Various processions are held throughout the city, and cultural performances, including traditional music and dance, take place. Pilgrims and tourists gather in large numbers to witness these festivities.
Floating Diyas in the Ganga: One of the traditions is to float small diyas on the Ganges, believed to bring blessings and fulfill wishes. Thousands of these lamps can be seen drifting down the river, creating a magical ambiance.
Fireworks Display: In addition to the lamps, a spectacular fireworks display takes place, lighting up the night sky.

We recently visited Varanasi and booked a car through carma Tools. Our driver, Pandey ji, was truly wonderful throughout the trip. He was extremely polite, punctual, and knowledgeable about the city and its spiritual landmarks. He made sure we were always comfortable, helped us navigate local areas with ease, and even suggested a few hidden gems we wouldn’t have found otherwise.
Thanks to him, our experience in Banaras was smooth, safe, and truly memorable. Highly recommend Karma Tools and especially Pandey ji for anyone planning a trip to Varanasi! 🙏
