Dev Diwali or (also called “Dev Deepawali”) is a significant festival celebrated in Kashi (Varanasi), one of the holiest cities in India, on the full moon night (Kartik Purnima) of the Hindu month of Kartik. It occurs 15 days after Diwali, the festival of lights. While Diwali marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, Dev Deepawali is celebrated as the day when the gods are believed to descend to Earth to celebrate the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura. The festival is especially grand along the ghats of the Ganga River in Varanasi.
